Warlock Origins: Chapter One

I reckon I should start from the beginning, before warlocks existed. There was a time in which witches thrived. They were the apothecaries, healers, and even moneylenders. The Generous Folk. The reassuring ones who helped the people when they needed it most. Some may ask, how did they acquire such abilities? 

No one is quite certain how the first witch came about. Some say the guardians blessed a young woman with some spell casting abilities to help the people in her village. All who were suffering from the plague. They may have realized it was a blessing to have these worthy women helping people, and more and more of them were gifted with this power.

The plague came and left, leaving these women with abilities and knowledge to cast spells that the spirits had taught them. As they lived on, ’twas forbidden for them, these female witches, to marry and be with child. Their powers were most commonly given to the worthy ones by the guardians through an initiation ceremony…so you see how great of a surprise it was, when they found out one from amongst them was with child. She had a lover, a young knight who was foolishly in love with her. She conceived a little boy and as he grew, the witches realized he had magical abilities. 

‘Lo and behold! A male witch lived, pure and bless’d. Tthe witches thought he was surely a gift from the guardians. As they outwardly coddled and pampered the child, they were angry. Angry and envious that a witch from among them could have a child and they could not. Trouble began to stir beneath the veil of their adorations.
